And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. 1 John 4:21
We say we love others, yet we often behave in ways that are contrary to the words we so easily allow to come from our lips. The truth is that we have a limited understanding of how to really love others the way God commands, especially if we don’t have a relationship with Jesus.
Over twenty years ago I was able to learn about different types of love when I attended a Bible Study in my community. At the time, I didn’t know much about love other than I knew my parents loved me, I thought I loved my high school sweetheart, and I loved reading books, but during this time I learned about God’s love for me.
And God loves me and others so much that He gave His son, Jesus, to die for the sins of mankind. Now, that is what love looks like.
That is an incredible expression of love.
Friend, that’s the type of love God wants us to experience.
Love sacrifices. And when we experience God’s love, we can love others unconditionally.
1 Corinthians 13:1 describes it this way.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. (NKJV)
Now, that’s a drop the mic moment. If you don’t have love for others, but you say you love God, you are just making noise.
